Hair Loss in Men and Women

I have a dear friend who is losing her hair.  Typically, you see it in men but some women experience hair loss as well.  It can be devastating for either.

I do not recall a time when my dear daddy did not have a sweep over.  We never discussed it but I guess he could not deal with a completely bald head.

Men’s Hair Loss Causes

The most common cause of hair loss in men is androgenetic alopecia.  Heredity, hormones, and age all play a part in this condition.

Women’s Hair Loss Causes

There are two types of thinning hair in women: hereditary and non-hereditary hair loss.  Non-hereditary happens when stress, diet, hormonal imbalance or a traumatic event causes hair follicles to remain in a resting state, increasing and shedding and temporarily thinning hair.

Another type of non-hereditary hair loss is alopecia areata, an auto-immune disorder that causes defined patches or complete hair loss.

Minoxidil Discovery  leads to Rogaine

Minoxidil was originally developed in the late 1950s as a treatment for ulcers.  After further studies of minoxidil on blood pressure, the scientists noticed some of the patients were reporting unexpected hair growth.

Expectations of Rogaine

Rogaine is going to take at least 4 months to work.   It can cause itching and dryness.  You might notice some shedding at first.  The shedding is coming from the hair you would have eventually lost on its own. You will want to apply this at night.   It is important not to get it on other areas as it will grow hair on other parts of your body.  After you apply it is recommended to put a shower cap on.  Hair growth is slow.  The hair that grows back is thin.  It is not a cure.  It is temporary and will fall out again when you stop using it.

Side effects

Internal side effects are very unlikely.  There is minimal absorption. It is not recommended for use on pregnant or breastfeeding women.

Additional Uses

It has been recommended for the eyebrows using a Q-tip.  It has been used for people who lose their hair after chemotherapy.

If you are interested in using this product do some additional research.  I would definitely give it a try if I had thinning hair issues. My daddy would have loved this!

The dermatologist I listened to said 5% was the most effective.  Below I will add some recommendations that you can find on Amazon.

Women’s Rogaine 5% Minoxidil Foam for Hair Thinning and Loss, Topical Treatment for Women’s Hair Regrowth, 4-Month Supply

Men’s Rogaine Extra Strength 5% Minoxidil Topical Solution for Hair Loss and Hair Regrowth, Topical Treatment for Thinning Hair, 3-Month Supply

Additional Info: As everyone ages, hair follicles begin to shrink, leading to thinning hair (or loss of hair density). Unlike hair loss shampoos or hair thickening products that temporarily plump hair from the outside, Rogaine 5% Minoxidil Solution penetrates into the scalp to reactivate shrunken hair follicles, allowing for new fuller, younger-looking hair to regrow. Rogaine is clinically proven to help regrow hair. No topical treatment works faster to grow fuller hair than Rogaine.

ROGAINE® is the #1 dermatologist recommended brand clinically proven to boost hair growth by directly targeting hair follicles to reactivate your hair’s growth cycle.
