Why am I suddenly more interested in my skin?
Since I began my skin care journey I have been subscribing to health, beauty, and supplement magazines. What lead me down this path was the changes I experienced after menopause.
Lower Levels of Estrogen
Less estrogen makes you prone to thinning, sagging and wrinkling. To relieve some of the effects of aging I try to take care of my specific skin care needs. My body is not making much collagen. My skin elasticity has dropped. When you combine that with the dryness it causes sagging, fine lines and wrinkles.
Collagen is one of the most nutrient-rich proteins in the human body.
Skin benefits from extra moisture
I have had oily skin most of my life. I am now combination but mostly dry. I need products that are creamy. After menopause, your oil glands aren’t as active. I switched to heavier cream and try to put moisturizer on while my skin is still damp.
I never used sunscreen except when we went to the beach. I did not think about wearing every day. I was born in 1961. As a child and teenager, we were encouraged to get some sun. I can remember so many times even as an adult when people would comment on how pale I was. A few times it was by men and almost bullying. I was embarrassed. No matter how long I laid out in the sun I never tanned. I freckle. I loved to lay out and found it therapeutic but I always felt that it had to be worked in as a routine task in the warm months. Just think how much damage I did without knowing the consequences. I could have had beautiful milky white skin that is now accepted.
I now have age spots on my face, arms, hands, and legs. You can fade them with exfoliating products that shed dead skins cells. There are skin- lightening products but you have to be diligent. Toners also help even out skin color. Do not forget to moisturize your hands. I never even thought about my hands.

Collagen gives your skins its plumpness and tightness. Your collagen drops as you age just like estrogen. Bright colored fruits and vegetables are foods you should eat. Isoflavones seem to act like estrogen in the body. They help with thinning skin. Soy is rich in isoflavones.
Stress, exercise, and Sleep
I had no idea that stress can make your skin drier. There is so much talk on the benefits of yoga, meditation, and techniques to help with anxiety and stress. Exercise helps with stress and boosts circulation. The extra oxygen can help your skin look brighter. Lack of sleep can change levels in your metabolism.

Ways to help your Skin Stay Hydrated
Adding moisturizer to damp skin will help your skin absorb your moisturizer. Using a humidifier with help with dry skin as well as helping to relieve congestion from the common cold and flu. Try to spritz on a facial spray for a boost. The last tip is not one I am fond with nor do I follow. Prolonged contact with hot water causes dry skin. I do not plan to give up my bath!
I want to look and feel the very best I can.
I am a realist and I know I will never look and feel 20 again. I do think there are things I could have done and still do that will make a difference.
Besides the suggested products above I use a dermastamp once per week and I have used Retin-A for many years.
